Spencer大志 (Spencer Taishi) is a half Japanese singer-songwriter from Aurora IL. After realizing an office job “just wasn’t for [him],” he decided to pursue a musical career full time in Japan. He is currently doing just that in Fukuoka Japan, while simultaneously teaching English. How’s that for multitasking?

Kahlua

Spencer大志 x Hibiki

Said best by John Steinbeck, “when a child first catches adults out — when it first walks into his grave little head that adults do not always have divine intelligence, that their judgments are not always wise, their thinking true, their sentences just — his world falls into panic desolation.” As a child, we are able to walk through life in a state of pure bliss. As we grow up, little by little we begin to piece together that the world isn’t this heavenly place filled with flowers. Once we realize this, it’s too late to go back and enjoy the world how we previously made it out to be, “and [our] world is never quite whole again.” However, we as humans all go through a phase in our life like this, and experiences such as these shape us into who we are today. In Kahlua, we reflect on the bittersweet memories we have of being a child. Shielded from the evils of the world without a care in the world. While we may not be able to go back and see the world through the eyes of the innocent child we once were, what we are able to do is apply what those experiences taught us, and continue to grow as humans.

Lyrics

(A jet lagged summer morning, Just a child enjoying a carefree life)

(Unaware of the grim reality of things, Spirits high)

(Stupidly going through the motions, Not a care in the world,)

(Unknowing that this daydream will come to an end, he opens the door to the real world)

Damn, wish I knew back then that everything I come across ain’t heaven sent

Everybody’s got a side that they present and a veil over their tail hiding true intent

Doctor I wanna overdose reality

Become another line in a sea of casualties

Still not feeling like I’m hanging tight but I guess that’s just a part of life

(The bitter aroma in a familiar mundane room)

(Picking up the faded films)

(I want to go back like granted)

(As it was on that summer day, Bitter sweet)

(One day it all vanished, I realized the reality of things)

(It was as if up until now, I was hiding behind a curtain that didn’t let any evil through)

(My parents protected me from anything threatening as if they were guardian angels)

(Therefore I was incapable of foreseeing a malevolent future, I was able to live in a state of pure bliss)

(and sleep through the night like a baby, having lighthearted dreams and occupying my mind with only positive thoughts)

(I was able to go about my days without any worries at all, I had a pure, innocent outlook on life that would soon become tainted)

(If I could go back, I wouldn’t change a thing)

(would simply enjoy my summer vacation through the eyes of a blithe child)

(In the rain of a clear sky, washing away bitter memories)

(Waving goodbye to the distant shadow)

(The answer lies close, even more than the light that shines in)

(Without hesitation, keep moving on)
